Xiangtan University (XTU) is a comprehensive and national key university. The great man Mao Zedong initiated its establishment in 1958. On September 10 that year, Mao inscribed the name of the university, and bade university administrators to “do their best to make a success of it”. In 1974, the Central leaders including Deng Xiaoping and Li Xiannian approved to reconstruct the university. In 1978, it was identified by the State Council as one of the 16 national comprehensive key universities. In 1981, it became one of China’s first batch of higher educational institutions to award master’s degree. The Central Government leaders, including Hua Guofeng, Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, He Guoqiang, and Liu Yandong, have paid great attention to its development.
XTU, always keeping in mind the great man’s entrustment, has been making great efforts to its self-development. Its comprehensive educational management and core competitiveness progressed steadily. It ranked 43rd among all the Chinese mainland universities on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2019. It was one of the few universities domestically that were included into both “THE” and “USNEWS” rankings. It was jointly built by the Hunan Provincial People’s Government (Hunan Government) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). It was also co-built by the Hunan Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.
XTU has graduate school and 20 colleges and departments. Professional disciplines include literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, economy, management, law, and arts. Four disciplines–chemistry, materials science, engineering, and mathematics, ranked among the top 1% of the global universities and research institutions on ESI. Seven disciplines have been listed in the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018. It has three national key disciplines (numerical mathematics, general mechanics and elements of mechanics, and localization of Marxism in China); four special national defense disciplines; two Hunan provincial superior and characteristic disciplines; 19 Hunan provincial key disciplines; 15 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degree programs; 31 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master’s degree; 13 professional subjects of master’s degree; and, 11 postdoctoral research centers. XTU has 11 subjects being ranked top 10% in China; 11 national characteristic subjects; one subject as the national comprehensive subject reform pilot; and, six subjects accredited by the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association (CEEAA).
XTU has following research platforms:
Four national research platforms: national-local joint engineering laboratory for special film materials; national-local joint engineering laboratory for new energy-storage battery key materials production technology; national-local joint engineering research center for chemical process simulation and intensification; and, national international sci-tech cooperation base for new energy equipment and energy-storage materials and device;
Two research centers for humanities and social science authorized by the Ministry of Education, and Chinese revolutionary themed tourism development authorized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism: Center for Mao Zedong Thought Study; and, Center for Study of the revolutionary spirits and cultural resources of the Communist Party of China;
Three key laboratories authorized by the Ministry of Education, including that on intelligent computing and information processing;
Two engineering research centers authorized by the Ministry of Education, including that on complicated curve processing technique and equipment; and,
Three Hunan “2011 Coordinated Innovation Centers”, including that on rule of law in Hunan and regional social management.
XTU has a batch of outstanding innovative research teams, including:
Four innovative teams authorized by the Ministry of Education: film materials and device mechanics; differential equation numerical value and Biocomputing; micro/nano energy materials and device physics; and, advanced photoelectricity and supermolecule materials;
Four innovative research teams supported by the Hunan Natural Science Foundation; and,
Seven provincial higher educational institution sci-tech innovation teams.
There are 1,489 full-time and 946 part-time teachers at XTU. Over 75% of them hold professional titles or doctoral degrees, and 25% had studied abroad. In 2018, the average academic level of the teachers ranked 80th in China. There are prominent teachers and research teams, including: four Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) academicians; six candidates of the “Ten Thousand Talent Program” (including those with the titles of leading expert, famous teacher, and young top-notch talent); six distinguished professors, lectures, and young scholars of the Changjiang Scholar Program (a program jointly financed by the tycoon Li Ka-shing and the Ministry of Education); five candidates of the national science foundation programs for outstanding young scholars; seven candidates of the national “New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project”; one national publicity and culture system talent; three national model teachers; nine national outstanding teachers; four national famous teachers; one national outstanding scientific and technological worker; two winners of the Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing; one national intellectual property rights leading talent; one national patent information leading talent; 31 candidates for the New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Program of the Ministry of Education; and, 52 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council.
In the past five years, XTU has undertaken more than 500 national projects. Among them, the number of National Social Science Fund of China funded projects ranked about 20 in the national colleges and universities. The number of papers cited by SCI and EI and the number of international citations all ranked at around 80th among all the national universities. The number of papers published on SCI and EI has took the lead in Hunan for five consecutive years. The Renmin University of China copy data citations and comprehensive index of XTU social science papers have been listed top 2% nationwide. Its five think tanks were included in the first batch of Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI). XTU has been awarded more than 100 ministerial and provincial level or above prizes, such as the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, the Ministry of Education Award for Excellent Research Achievements in Colleges and Universities, the Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Award, and the Hunan Provincial Social Science Award for Outstanding Achievements. It has established high-level production, education, and research bases such as academician workstations and innovation research institutes. In the past five years, more than 1,000 cooperation projects for production, education, and research have been signed, and more than 2,000 patent applications have been filed. Its transformation rate of scientific research results topped the list of universities in Hunan province.
There are 31,842 full-time students in XTU, including 7,059 doctoral and master candidates. It has 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers and the first batch of national excellent legal talent training base, national talent training model innovation experimental zone, and national university student cultural quality education base. It is the “National College Students Innovation Experimental Plan” operation unit and the first batch of national deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration colleges. The XTU postgraduate recommendation rate is about 13%, the entrance examination rate around 30%, and the graduate initial employment rate above 93%. It is a typical experienced college in graduate employment. The quality of talent training enjoys a good social reputation and has been awarded “excellent” grade twice for the undergraduate teaching work level by the Ministry of Education. Since the founding of the university, nearly 310,000 graduates have been trained and a large number of outstanding alumni emerged. They are: Yuan Yaxiang, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) academician, Chinese Mathematical Society president, and International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) president; Zhou Xiangyu, CAS academician; Ou Jinping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE); Xu Jinchao, world-renowned mathematician and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics member; Xu Xiaoshu, world-famous 3D printing scientist and “Father of SLS”; Yu Jianjun, the world's first high-intensity excimer vacuum ultraviolet nitrogen generator developer; Wang Luxiang, the famous curator of Hong Kong Phoenix TV; and, Hu Min, “Father of China's IELTS” and New Channel International Education Group president.
XTU has gained an increasing influence internationally and domestically. It has successively established cooperation platforms and launched 30-plus international cooperation training projects with 60 universities and research institutions from more than 20 countries, including the US, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Uganda, Ghana, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. XTU set up Confucius institutes in Leon University in Spain and Makerere University in Uganda respectively. XTU was included into the “China-Africa Universities 20+20 Cooperation Plan” by the Ministry of Education of PRC.
“The Shaofeng Peak is high and the Xiangjiang River is long. Xiangtan University is a cultural and educational center of science and education…” The university will adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; thoroughly implement the spirits of the 19th CPC National Congress; take root in the Chinese mainland to run a socialist university with Chinese characteristics; and accelerate promoting “Double First-Class” initiative, to contribute to realizing the Chinese Dream of achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!
